This week’s blog is introducing you to our new group – Vocal Edge Choir
We had announced it earlier on in the year under the name “YVS Singers” but after much deliberation, we have switched to this title instead. We hope you like it as much as we do!
Ok – nice name. But why should I join?
There are so many reasons why you should join us, but the most important thing you need to know is that this choir is all about YOU as a singer. Tom and Laura want to give as many people as possible the chance to sing in a group that doesn’t have a focus on the directors – rather this is about having fun and developing your musical potential and not about inflating our egos.
With both Laura and Tom being qualified singing teachers with the Institute for Vocal Advancement, you can rest assured that we know how the voice works. We won’t ask you to do anything that might harm your voice, but we can promise that you’ll have fun! We truly believe that keeping your voice healthy is the key to success, so we’ll also be offering choir members access to discounted lessons outside of rehearsal times to help you achieve that.
The emphasis here is not on your musical abilities, but about having fun with your voice and getting opportunities to take it further. We will issues some sheet music during rehearsals but the ability to read sheet music is not essential. By working in this way, you get to learn a little bit about working from sheet music, while building and refining your musical ear, the best of both worlds!
I’m interested – don’t stop talking now!
We’ll also be running choir-specific workshops outside of rehearsal times, so if you feel like you need help improving a specific area of your voice or performance, we’ve got you covered. These will be discounted and different to our other planned workshops, as we’ll be focusing on the songs for each performance. We’ll even organise some social activities where we can all just meet up and get to know each other too.
All of our soloists will have access to one-to-one voice lessons and mentoring to help them improve and grow as singers. The soloists will be determined during rehearsals on an individual basis – we will do our best to give as many people as possible a chance to sing solo. It’s not about anything you may have done before, but about your potential. If we think you can sing outside of the chorus in either a solo or duet setting then we will give you the opportunity to do so.
As we get closer to showtime, there will be specific workshop rehearsals outside of normal times where the soloists can have a chance to refine their songs even further.
As well as our planned concerts, we’re also looking into some smaller charity events. This will hopefully include a spot busking at the Christmas Fair on Princes Street, and some other one-off events to help you get used to performing for a crowd. We’re hoping to have a good-sized group for these, but if the group size is limited for the specific event, then we’ll work on a first-come-first-served basis.
If that wasn’t enough, Vocal Edge Choir will have it’s own dedicated webpage with a members area that will have access to all of the different parts, lyrics and backing tracks you’ll need to practice outside of rehearsal times. We’ll even make sure there are warm up exercises there for you to use, so it will be a real treasure trove of information.
We’ll launch a members only Facebook group as well for choir members to socalise, and get to know each other. We’ll use it to post hints and tips on your voice and getting the most from choir sessions as well as lots of fun stuff to keep you entertained.
So what are you waiting for?!

We’ll be announcing further specifics of the Vocal Edge Choir once they are determined, so you really don’t want to miss out.
